While Motorola has been teasing the launch of the next foldable Razr for some time now, the company has now officially set a release date for the arrival of its next foldable on August 2nd.
The ‘double flagship’ event that Motorola shared news of via Chinese social media platform weibo (opens in new tab) it is also set to host the launch of the Moto X30 Pro, which will be the world’s first phone with a 200MP camera.
Samsung has recently confirmed the date of its next release – August 10th – in which we expect to see the new Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, however Motorola’s new announcement puts the Motorola Razr 3 release date ahead. from Samsung for eight days. The caveat is that Motorola’s dual launch appears to be exclusive to China for now, while the Korean company’s new foldables are expected to launch in multiple markets, internationally, from the get-go.
Analysis: more widespread and accessible
Unlike the last two generations of the foldable Razr, Motorola is believed to be dressing the Razr 3 with more traditional flagship-class hardware, above the mid-range internals we saw in the 2019 and 2020 models.
The main difference is expected to be the switch to a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, while the phone is also configured to sport a 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED main display, a 3-inch cover display, a 50MP paired with a 13MP ultrawide and up to 512GB of internal storage.
While this spec sheet suggests that Motorola is finally addressing the biggest shortcomings of the current Razr lineup, it could be a case of too little too late.
Samsung’s Z Flip clamshell folding line now sets the pace for this particular format, and based on the announcement article Dr. TM Roh, President and Business Head of Samsung’s MX, shared on July 21, fans can expect more than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 brought to the table: cutting-edge performance with greater affordability.
The OZ Flip 3 launched at a price of $999 / £949 / AU$1,499, while the upcoming Motorola Razr 3 is expected to come in at around $1,399 / £1,399 / AU$1,900, despite a hardware rundown that – although it shows improvements – it doesn’t make it the most competitive grab for Samsung’s upcoming Z Flip 4.
