If you thought Samsung was only happy with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip lines when it comes to folding phones, think again. We’ve known for a while that the company has been experimenting with different folding formats, and now some of those experiments have been shown in a video.
A small clip shared by @UniverseIce (opens in new tab) – a respectable leaker – showcases several foldable and extendable Samsung phones that have yet to be announced.
One has the look and feel of a standard handset but allows the user to pull out one or both sides of the screen to extend it, while another is like a Galaxy Z Fold 4, but with two folds instead of one so it flips open. on a laptop-sized screen.
We also catch a glimpse of one that doubles up as a laptop but is all-screen rather than having a keyboard on the bottom half, and in this video it’s showing off a gaming controller layout.
While we take any leaks with a pinch of salt, this looks like an official Samsung promo video, and the content would have been hard to fake, so this is likely genuine.
That said, for now these are possibly just experiments and conceptual devices, so while some of these form factors could see the light of day eventually, we wouldn’t expect an imminent announcement.
Analysis: It’s not the first time we’ve seen Samsung’s experiments
While it’s the first time we’ve seen these concepts on video, it’s not the first time Samsung has showcased these ideas.
In November, the company launched a website highlighting potential uses for foldable OLED displays, and included various smartphone concepts.
One was the ‘Slidable Flex’ which looks a lot like the extendable display screen. Then there’s the Flex Note, which is the laptop-like device. There were others too that weren’t seen in this new video, like the Rollable Flex, which has a scrollable screen.
So Samsung seems to have no shortage of foldable phone ideas. Hopefully some of these end up as commercially available products, like the Motorola Razr 2022 and Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 following Samsung’s lead in terms of design, it’s already starting to look like there’s a lack of innovation in the foldable space.
