Amazon has announced that it is hosting an event for its Ring devices, services and products that will take place at 12:00 ET / 17:00 BST on Wednesday, September 28 (2:00 AEST, September 29) – tomorrow at the time of this writing.
The event doesn’t come completely out of nowhere. Amazon usually hosts a product launch around this time every year, with similar announcements taking place in 2020 and 2021. Based on its history, we can expect the retail giant to reveal new entries in its best lineup of smart speakers – the Amazon Echo – and from him calling out Ring out by name, we imagine we’ll see a new best video doorbell or better home security camera enter the picture too.
It might also give us some insight into the types of deals we can expect to see in October in its Prime Early Access Sale (read: Prime Day 2) – with the deals event acting as a precursor to Black Friday 2022. If Amazon announcing a new Echo Dot (for example), we will likely see older models at a big discount during the next sale.
So what do we think will be announced?
Expect the expected
Amazon hasn’t explicitly said what it will be showing, but we can make some assumptions.
During last year’s Amazon 2021 event, we saw its entire Echo Show lineup updated – with the Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen), Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) and Amazon Echo Show 15 all being revealed. Likewise, this year we expect to see new Echo announcements, but for its more traditional smart speakers.
The Amazon Echo (2020) and Amazon Echo Dot (2020) are definitely new models. They replaced their predecessors after only a year, so some new versions are already a year behind schedule, depending on how you want to think about it.
Also, as we’ve seen before, Amazon often makes some sort of echo announcement at these events, so a new Echo and Echo Dot makes a lot of sense.
In addition to the Echo, we’ll likely also get an announcement from Ring, with Amazon specifically mentioning Ring when describing what the September 28 event entails.
Ring has a few products that haven’t been updated in a while, so we can see a lot from the Amazon-owned security company.
And while we haven’t heard any information about the launch of Blink so far, it’s entirely possible that Amazon other security company will appear with updated products as well.
Alternatively, Amazon could surprise us all with a new type of Echo, Ring, or Blink device, but we’ll have to wait and see. There weren’t really any leaks or hints to give us a clue.
One more (crazy) thing…
In addition to its more typical device ads, Amazon also loves to reveal more outlandish products at these events.
At the lower end of the scale, we’ll likely see a crazy new cabinet for your Echo smart speakers – to match Mickey Mouse and Grogu case (opens in new tab) we already have. This stand would likely be compatible with any new Echo devices announced by Amazon and would likely tie into another Disney property – although it could also be inspired by one of Prime Video’s best shows like Rings of Power.
We may also have an update on Astro, the cute little robot that Amazon wants to be our home’s assistant and bodyguard, but who disappeared shortly after the announcement.
After its release, the only thing we heard was an alleged leaked internal document that warns that the Astro is dangerous and accident-prone – something Amazon denied in a statement to us. Perhaps Amazon wants to take the time at this year’s event to remind us about Astro, update us on its development, and assert that the robot is no small threat.
But this is all just our best guess, so to really know what Amazon is announcing, stay tuned for our live coverage of the event and our reviews when we get a chance to try out the new products for ourselves.
